We are so pleased to announce that Kate will be attending Trust + Travel’s Immersive Writing Retreat as a guest contributor in October 2019.

If you’re a long-time follower of SPINE, you may be familiar with our love for writing retreats. We’ve written about retreats all over, from North America to Europe and beyond, because we’re true believers in prioritizing your writing life and making the space to do so! Not only are writing retreats a great way to connect with other writers, they’re an amazing opportunity to prioritize your writing projects, learn from others, and invest in your dreams.

Hosted by talented friends and writers Jade Moyano and Erin Rose Belair, both of whom are widely published writers, the Trust + Travel Immersive Writing Retreat places particular emphasis on nurturing your identity as a writer and connecting with others on a similar journey. Held in an intimate eco-hotel called Verana in Yelapa, Mexico, from October 10th-16th, the retreat is only accessible via a short boat ride from Puerto Vallarta. The hand-built resort is carved into the side of the Mexican jungle using materials sourced from the land. Aside from the stunning views and remote location, the resort boasts ten private and unique houses, each with their own outdoor space, as well as spa and massage services. In other words, it’s dreamy.

Having spent the last seven years travelling the globe, teaching yoga, and writing, Jade has cultivated a life of exploration and adventure. Her travel writing has been published by Monocle, Conde Nast Traveller UK, Passion Passport, and Uproxx Travel

Erin is a multi-genre writer currently working with Kate on her first novel (see The Heroine package for insight into how they’re working together). She has an MFA in fiction and is an experienced creative writing teacher, leading workshops around the world. Her short fiction has previously been published in Glimmer Train (which awarded her the Emerging Writer's Award for her story “Rare Items from the Universe”), Narrative, and The Greensboro Review

As for the retreat itself, Trust + Travel offers daily meditation and yoga sessions, a variety of writing workshops and group discussions, and even an evening dedicated to open mic and poetry readings. There is, of course, also plenty of free time for hiking, exploring, writing, and time at the beach for a proper dose of relaxation. Here’s an idea of some of the workshops you can expect:

  • Travel Writing Workshop: Structure Meets Style

  • The Power of Sensory Language: The Real Secret to Travel Writing

  • Nonfiction Lyrical Essay (also known as Anyone Can Write)

  • Create Characters From Scratch: A Foray Into Fiction

  • The Business of Writing: From Pitches to Published

  • The Life of a Writer

  • The Art of Doing Nothing: Exercises to Unblock

We’re so excited to be included in this event and to be able to invite you along with us! Jade and Erin are kindly offering members of the JEC community a discounted rate, so if you’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to invest in yourself and your writing life, now’s the time! There are only a few spots left, so if you would like to join us for a week of creativity and connection in paradise, make sure to mention us in your application. See you there!

Whether you can afford a writing-related getaway or not, come join us in The Book Writers’ Club for monthly letters from Kate on the ins and outs of being a writer, direct to your inbox!
