We get it, it can be hard, nay, impossible-feeling sometimes to find time in your schedule to finish projects and really work on your craft. A writing retreat is a perfect opportunity to get away from the chaos of everyday life and really invest in your creative self, and it doesn’t have to be a daydream. Story Rebels

Story Rebels is a travelling writing retreat hosted this time round in Eastern Sicily by American writer and photographer Malika Ali Harding. It takes place over the course of four days at a restored historic villa and includes access to luxuries spanning from swimming in a lava stone pool to horseback riding, a pasta making lesson, and plenty of time for solo writing. A dreamy writing vacay in Sicily? Sounds pretty good to us!

Paris Writers Retreat

The Paris Writers Retreat is hosted by Wendy Goldman Rohm, a New York Times bestselling author and founder of the Rohm Literary Agency. Participants are encouraged to plan and execute a piece of fiction or nonfiction over the course of five days through a series of tailored workshops and seminars. The retreat is punctuated by group readings, networking soirees, and writing exercises. Though participants are responsible for booking their own accommodations, the group activities take place at a private loft in downtown Paris. We want it.

A Writer Within

A Writer Within is a week-long retreat held at the Villa Castellare de Sernigi in Tuscany, Italy. Hosted by Kathryn Kay, a writing coach from Pasadena, California, this retreat encourages writers to explore their own capabilities through group writing sessions. The schedule includes guided tours of local historic sights, a local wine tasting, and a private writing consultation with Kathryn.

Circle of Misse

The Circle of Misse Writing Retreats are held at a nineteenth-century maison de maître (that’s mansion to us apartment-dwellers) in France’s gorgeous Loire Valley. They offer three different retreat experiences: the Hotel Retreat, an independent trip aimed at giving you alone time to focus on your work; the Studio Retreat, which invites you to join in on optional classes and workshops; and the Mentored Retreat, offering individual coaching for writers who are working through a long project. Each guest has their own room with en-suite bathroom and writing desk so you’ll have privacy to work on your masterpiece! They also offer a resident program.

This seven-night retreat is held at a private villa in Duće, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Hosted by several writers and teachers, Writing on Water focuses on facilitating self-expression through group writing and workshops. Other amenities include guided historical and cultural tours of nearby landmarks, hiking trips, and the option of solo outings. Writers are encouraged to embrace the cultural wonder of Croatia while feeding their creativity and imagination.

Hamlet’s Hideaway

You guessed it, this retreat is hosted in Denmark at the historic Fredensborg Royal Inn, beside the Fredensborg Palace. Hamlet’s Hideaway is a retreat for writers who want to feel creative flow among other beginner and experienced writers. Daily workshops are led by two writing professionals and include such topics as pitching for publication, writing personal narratives, and research. There’s also plenty of time to explore other attractions, including the Royal Danish Library, and Hans Christian Andersen’s gravesite.

Retreats for You is held at The Court, a historic seventeenth-century thatched building in the middle of Sheepwash, a small village in Devon, England. They hold “Just Write Weeks,” booking out rooms for writers who want some intensive writing time, as well as themed events including a Pitch to a Publisher Weekend, and a Developing Your Novel Tutored Retreat. This is definitely the ideal retreat if you want to cozy up in a picturesque place for a week, with plenty of outdoor walking trails and home-cooked meals to keep you inspired.

Krouna Writing Workshops

Hosted by writers Henriette Lazaridis and Rebecca Morgan Frank, Krouna Writing Workshops is a six-day retreat held in Epirus, Greece. This is one of the more intensive workshops on our list, with manuscripts up to 100 pages (or a variation depending on genre) analyzed over daily group workshop sessions. Each student also receives a one-on-one session focused on discussing their work and areas to improve on. The schedule includes plenty of free writing time, group discussions, guided exploration of the area, and ouzo and appetizers at sunset.

Get Away to Write

Hosted by the Murphy Writing program at Stockton University, Get Away to Write is a retreat held at the University of Dundee in Scotland. Attendees are invited to stay on campus only a short walk from the city centre for eight days of writing workshops, readings, and free writing exercises. Afternoons and evenings are left free for attendees to write, explore local historic buildings, and wander the city.
