This edit is all about the big picture. There's no room for correcting grammatical errors because we're all about the story—after all, why polish the ornaments when you haven't yet sanded the floor?
We'll work on identifying and resolving plot holes, developing characters, naturalizing dialogue, heightening drama, improving organization, influencing the pace—all the juicy stuff that goes into creating a riveting read!
A substantive edit is a hybrid: developmental and copy editing in one effective bundle. It tends to the mechanical needs of your manuscript—punctuation, grammar, consistency, style, etc.—while also providing insights and suggestions and posing questions to improve the structure and style and reorganize the content when it matters.
In 9/10 cases, a manuscript requires this level of editing at the very least in order to be "shelf-ready."
A copy edit deals with the mechanics of a manuscript: it addresses every single error to ensure that the book that ends up in your readers' hands is as clear, professional, and fluent as possible. It ensures that consistency is maintained throughout, so that your reader doesn't wonder why you're flitting from okay to OK to O.K. and back again. In other words, the copy edit is the suit and tie of the editing wardrobe, making sure you're presentable in "good company!"
A proofread is the final editing pass that ensures no errors have been reintroduced into the manuscript and that no typos, page discrepancies, or other issues remain before the book is printed. Please note that JEC only proofreads manuscripts that have been previously edited by a JEC editor.
